About Us

It all started when…

Kawai’ulu ‘O Tahoe Outrigger Canoe Club was originally formed in 2000 by Daphne Hougard after relocating to Truckee from the bay area. Bringing her love of the sport to the mountains Daphne founded our North Shore Team, followed by Sue Norman who founded our South Shore Team. With a shorter season than any other team in the world, they believed that the combination of the natural athletic enthusiasm of locals, and training at altitude, could create a compelling and competitive team; thus the first Outrigger Canoe Club in Lake Tahoe and Truckee was formed.

Kawai’ulu ‘O Tahoe Outrigger Canoe Club is a non profit organization which provides instruction in basic and advanced techniques in the sport of outrigger canoeing. We provide the tools for you to experience all the tradition and excitement this sport offers. Our club consists of a diverse group of individuals whose focus is to perpetuate the sport of Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling in the Tahoe and Truckee areas. We host several community outreach events to teach community members about outrigger canoeing and allow them to participate in the sport.

Our local teams are consistently top finishers race after race. Many of our members continue to earn highly coveted seats in boats on some of the biggest International long distance races around the world.

We are members of the Northern California Outrigger Canoe Association (NCOCA) which governs our racing events.
